Does ArmorAll OUTLAST Brakedust Repellent really work?

I've been looking for a product that can help fight brake dust. I understand the only way to really keep brake dust from forming is to a) not drive the vehicle, or b) use ceramic brake pads. Since I don't want to walk everywhere, and I don't wanna lose the stopping power of the metallic pads the Brembos came with, a third option was to find a product that "claims" to limit brake dust from accumulating. I decided to do a real-world product test on my Jeep SRT with ArmorAll's OUTLAST Brake Dust Repellent. The pictures on the bottle make a huge claim, even though there's an asterisk that points to a message on the back that says it's a simulated photo. Still, why put such a bold claim unless the product really works? Decided to test this on one of my rims before a long drive to New York and back. The rims always come back covered in brake dust, so this would be a great test to see if this stuff helps. The results are pretty shocking. Enjoy.
Disclaimer: I do not work for ArmorAll, or any of their competitors. This is a real-world test following the instructions on their product.

You staged the car interior scenes as the shirt is the same in both the beginning of the exercise and the end scenes, likewise the street scene outside the car is the same. So if you staged those scenes, why should we believe anything you do or say? You've already proven that you have no problem with staging - to present the image you want shown, even if it is untrue.

    • EastCoastJeepSRT
      EastCoastJeepSRT

Steven Russell Yeah I was disappointed too. Cleaning those wheels was a PIA. Even now with the Trackhawk we have the same issues. A lot of products promise miracle-like results and the reality is that they work “sorta”. I wish there was something that helped reduce the brake dust issue besides getting ceramic pads. Even ceramic coating the wheels doesn’t really help that much. Tried that also.

    • Counter Point
      Counter Point

@EastCoastJeepSRT Yeah, on a second viewing it does appear that the van on the right is positioned differently in the window frame, meaning one of you is in a different spot that the earlier shots. I retract my earlier criticism. And nothing wrong with having 30 copies of the same shirt, no really! I guess I am just disappointed that you didn't deliver a miracle brake dust cleaner. I'm getting tired of the yellow stains on my wheels and the musky smell left from my canine friends. Too bad about the Jeep. [drum roll]

Steven Russell My car is parked in two different spots. I applied it on Friday and then showed you what it looked like late Sunday after my drive. It’s pretty cut and dry. Look at how much brake dust was formed. It’s not magic. I didn’t paint the brake dust on. I sprayed this crap on my wheels on a Friday, drove the entire weekend, and showed you what it looked like 3 days later. It’s garbage. What is staged? The fact that I wear the same shirt? I wear it daily. I’m wearing it today lol.

    • Counter Point
      Counter Point

@EastCoastJeepSRT So you did this exercise in one day? That would explain why the shirt at 1:30 is the same as the shirt at 9:35. And you parked in the same spot you were in earlier that day before driving 300 miles. Okay, the story works well enough, or you wore the same shirt on multiple scenes. As to the product in question...not interested in the least. I just let the neighborhood dogs piss off the brake dust when they hike their legs on my wheels. Seems the dogs use my wheels for a message board and I rely on them for the cleaning and giving my tires the wet look.

Maybe don't use this in direct sunshine which may have caused the white film residue. And even thought the directions say to do your tires with whatever tire shine you use first...I would recommend doing the rims first with this product then the tires. It seems to me that using the tire shine after the rim protectant would hide any drip from the rim protectant on the tires...imo. Now, after having viewed the whole vid...I'm total agreement...this shit is garbage!!!. Never have I been a Amour-All guy. I prefer Meguire's products any day. • EastCoastJeepSRT
      EastCoastJeepSRT

Are you fucking stupid? You’re supposed to clean the rims first, then apply this product and allow it to dry. Dumbass. This product is meant to be sprayed on the rim AFTER you clean them and it’s supposed to reduce the amount of brake dust that accumulated after. It’s people like you that comment before paying attention to what is being done and what the product is meant for. smfh

  • z1522
    z1522

I believe the essential aspect is that subsequent cleaning will be much easier; the concept of any repellant actually immunizing a metal surface from gathering brake dust is pretty near beyond the laws of chemistry and electrostatics. Calling "complete B.S." is what I'd say about any street user professing the need or ability to gauge dirty racing pads from every other perfectly adequate pad option which might stay far cleaner, minus bragging rights of course. Stirling Moss'es 300 SLR won the 1955 Mille Miglia with just oversized drum brakes, averaging 98 mph over 990 miles of open, twisty, narrow Italian roads. His wire wheels look pretty clean, so perhaps drum brakes also solved this sad problem.

Dear consumer, My name is Guy. I am the president and CEO of The Armor All/STP Products Company. Thank you for trying our product. We're sorry that you didn't have a positive experience. I would like to invite you to try the product again but follow our instructions more correctly this time. It looks like you used half a can on one wheel! Thanks again. -Guy Andrysick PS - In your description, at the bottom, you mention that you don't work for and are not affiliated with us. I think it's fairly clear and obvious in your review that you do not work for our company! Especially the last minute or so. That gave us all a good laugh around here. Thanks for the smiles.

    • EastCoastJeepSRT
      EastCoastJeepSRT

So your response to this is to a) tell me that I followed your instructions incorrectly, and then b) mock me for what I said? The instructions were followed to the letter. “Liberally” spray the entire wheel. #2 per the instructions. Didn’t use “half a can”, but made sure to cover the entire wheel “liberally” as instructed. In case you incorrectly used “liberally” in error, it means: lib·er·al·ly /ˈlib(ə)rəlē/ adverb 1. in large or generous amounts. "she quotes liberally from the Bible" So if so had used half of a can on one wheel that would’ve been overkill, but still would’ve been following the instructions. I apologize if I’m coming across as shrewd. I may be taking your response the wrong way. Do you know how disappointing it was trying to eliminate or reduce the brake dust from a 6 piston Brembo brake and not having a product help that was supposed to? That video wasn’t the first time I had tried the product. I tried it numerous times on different wheels hoping that it wasn’t the type of finish on the wheel that was interfering with the product, and to also make sure that testing it in varying temps with different amounts of application were covered. In summary I will try it again. I have yet another set of wheels on my vehicle with a ceramic coating and have been curious to see if this stuff would work on them.

RobertsRestorations Ceramic brakes don’t have the same stopping power as metallic ones. You can claim they’re the “best” if you’d like, but that’s an anecdotal comment compared to actual tests. That’s why I thought you were trolling since the majority of car people know this. Especially if you drive a vehicle with large Brembo brakes.

  • Roberts Musical Restorations
    Roberts Musical Restorations

I use this all the time on my BMW. WORKS GREAT!!!!! If you are getting that much dust using this product I can only imagine how much you get normally. The key thing to know using this is the wheel must be clean and dry. Spray on a good coat and let dry for about 1 to 2 hrs. And NEVER touch the surface after it dries. Otherwise the dust will stick to where you touched. The great thing about using this is when you do get brake dust , all you need to do is take a hose and spray them off and they will be shinny again. But again do not touch the surface. Definitely works!! Much better than not using it. Works for a good month or so then use again during my regular car cleaning.

    • EastCoastJeepSRT
      EastCoastJeepSRT

RobertsRestorations Doesn’t work on the type of finish our rims have. Best product that beats this is F11 or even Hydrosilex. This stuff is great for non-performance vehicles that don’t use 6 piston Brembo brakes with metallic pads. The metallic pads have the best stopping power over anything else. It’s a downside to performance.

I use this on my VW Phaeton. It does work. The Phaeton throws ungodly amounts of brake dust off on to the chrome rims I have. I spray it on and let it dry. One thing your guy didn't do is wipe each rim off with a microfiber towel after it dries. I do that and this stuff really works. I'd like to see another test with him wiping the rims down with a microfiber cloth after it dries with that unsightly white residue.

You still need to hose it off! The Spray provides a thin Barrier between your Rims and the Brake Dust. It's not Magic in a Can as if brake dust will not appear, but it is to keep the Dust from Sticking so that it doesn't require Scrubbing to remove it.

I have a white 2015 Jeep SRT with the same exact rims (black chrome spider monkey) and I use this stuff all the time. It says to apply "liberally"(in excess amounts) which you didn't really do. This stuff is actually a godsend, except for the damn white residue which you actually get used to. You need to actually hold the sprayer down and go over the rim in entirety for like 20-30 seconds. Definitely need to give that a try my man, you won't regret it. Ive gone a good two weeks without getting my car cleaned (after using this) and my rims will still look like new vs. after the ride home from the carwash without using this and already having break dull rims from the break dust. I would say that I probably can get a good two uses out of one can (One use meaning used on all 4 rims one time). You will notice that there will be a little white drip mark on the bottom of your tires too however all you need to do is a quick wipe and your good to go. You will also notice that your breaks will start to squeak after using this too, just a heads up. Also I recommend only really using this on rims that were just cleaned because even if there is just a slight film of breakdust on your rims before using it it will just move it around and make it look sloppy. Absolutely beautiful rims but the struggle is real lol

nice review. It shows that there are no miracles when it comes to car care. I would recommend EBC brake Pads. The are made of some kind of Kevlar. The braking power is the same. They withstand even higher temps. They produce much less dust and the dust is much less aggressive. It doesn´t burn into the rims anymore and it can be cleaned very easy. I am very satisfied as I got crazy with the brake dust burning into the side planes of my white SRT. To get the paint clean was even harder than to clean the rims.

Christine Smith Yes, exactly. Different brake pads produce different amounts of brake dust. You don't have Brembo brakes and the amount of brake dust high performance brakes create if this is working for you. You're kidding yourself if you think this shit really works though. On a normal vehicle you don't get anywhere near what these type of brakes produce, and their claims are outrageous. Thanks for the comment though. This stuff is terrible at stopping brake dust.

I have, and LOVE how fast it shines them. It also helps the brake dust when washing the vehicle. I just like testing stuff in real-world settings, since all of the marketing is just complete BS.

Hi. I believe the reason MAY have been not enough applied. I had the complete opposite results and have used all three the "Armor All Wheel Protectant", then their Armor All Outlast brake dust repellent" and their new "Armor All Quicksilver Brake Dust Repellent" (Same just renamed), and I got amazing results. I had no residue on my polished aluminum rims and would last for a good month or more. But I was told that you have to REALLY SOAK IT on the rims.. I would see people almost empying the can (it used to be a very small 7oz can) at shows.. I nearly would use the entire 7oz can on my 4 rims. Mind you I don't have major issues with brake dust, they did however keep my rims VERY clean for a lot longer. And clean up was an absolute breeze. It seems to have very good reviews online.. But like MOST things, they are EXAGGERATED BIG TIME. So it likely would be easier to CLEAN but not KEEP clean untouched..

If they have to KEEP changing the name of the same item to get people to buy.. they should be a red flag LOL

I sprayed so much on it that it was running off the tire like rain water. I drenched the rims with it. These brakes generate a LOT of brake dust. I don't think ArmorAll took into consideration Brembos when they marketed this. lol
