How to Install LED Bed Lights (Fun DIY Project)
Learn how to install LED strip lights in the bed of your truck or under the hood of your car for less than $30. I show you how to wire the white LED strip lights with a push button switch and a magnetic switch so when you open the tailgate the lights come on automatically and illuminate the inside of the truck bed.
You can also install the LED lights under the hood of your car so when you open your hood, the lights turn on automatically or with the push of a button. In this case we are working on a Ford Raptor pickup truck but the LED light installation process is the same on any vehicle.

@ChrisFix thank you for the awesome vid! Makes DIY so much fun to do! I have a request, can you make a side vid on adding in a secondary power source to us other than the car battery? I only ask because my car battery died and needed to look under hood and the light won't work if the battery is dead. 😅 Something as an emergency backup. Maybe something next to the fuse by the red battery post? Thanks again.

I'm assuming the truck has a 7 pin trailer hookup, an easier way to run that power wire would be to tap that power wire that's already behind the rear bumper in that built in 7 pin trailer adapter. Just my .02 to help save time in the wiring process.

Could I run a line from the battery to a fuse and then to my dashboard and multiple switches so I could hook up 3 or 4 lights with only one line and fuse from the battery? or should I have a fuse behind each switch and for every accessory. I imagine that.

Today is November 11, 2020. As a subscriber, I have no idea how I missed this video back in January! I just replaced my old vinyl tonneau cover with a hard, Bak Flip MX4 cover. Once that was done, I couldn't wait to tackle this project! I have a 2011 Toyota Tundra with the OEM bed rail system. I also have a sprayed in factory bedliner. I decided to run the led strip under the rails. I used 99% isopropyl alcohol to clean the surfaces but also ran the 3M high bonding tape all the way around, just to make sure the LED's would stay stuck. The more difficult part was figuring out the wiring on the switch as the wires are different colors than yours, Chris. It didn't take long to figure that out and I felt tremendous satisfaction when the whole install was complete! It looks amazing and works perfectly! The only issue I have is the LED strips were beginning to sag on the ends of the rails I attached them to so to solve that, I wrapped each of the rail ends with a black zip tie. So far, nothing seems to be sagging! Thanks again Chris for another educational, fun project!

Hi, I like very much your video. I want to install LED running light signal and White Courtesy Light. I look on the passage side access plate why to many wire for me. the LED light have 4 wire Black, Red, Yellow and white. Can you help me or someone....

  • worxharder

Don't forget, that wire size directly dictates how many amps can travel through the wire itself. Oversizing a fuse is dangerous. Oversizing leads to the fuse, a over current protection device, to be utterly useless if it exceeds the amp limit on the wiring leading to and away from it. You can get away with a few extra amps when sizing up, but always be cautious when doing so. If it's an old circuit it may have already been stepped up...and now your entering a danger zone. For more clarification on amp to wire size always reference the National Electric Code. Also know as the NEC. A quick Google search can save you your ride and possibly your life. Great video Chris!

And will this work if i take positive from another electric powered device like from back light or something thats closer to the bed, or is there another way to get power except straight from the battery? Not up to par with your usual work, Chris. - The LED strip stuck to the front of the bed is gives "hack job" a bad name. Running the lights thru LED plastic channel would protect the light from weather exposure, and black channel with a smoked lens would blend in with the black bed. Alternatively - only run the lights up the two sides and wire the sides together under the bed. - And stuffing the excess strip lights inside the body? Really? Why not trim the LED strip and do a proper job? - The manual switch doesn't bring much to the party. A smart install would use an on-off-on switch. Combined with a magnet switch this would give you - auto-on when gate open; manual always on (gate open or closed); manual always off.
