About this video:
In this video Ian Stone from Simpawtico Dog Training shows you how to use a kong dog toy so that it’s fast, easy and effective at reducing 90% of the most common behavior problems. Crate training, potty training, barking, chewing, and even anxiety can all be addressed by teaching your dog to love their stuffed Kongs. Embracing simplicity, our approach isn’t just about Kong recipes, but focuses on teaching the dog to love the Kong so that it becomes an automatic training tool. Kong stuffing can be super easy, for puppies and adult dogs.

Amen to this. I can’t count how many dogs behaviors I’ve fixed or reduced by this tactic. People always hate hearing it or don’t want to but it’s true.

    • austin hoover
      austin hoover

Anthony Vultaggio also to note creating a food drive with a mixture of toy/prey drive will really help the dog get more interested. Intensify the rewards and exaggerate the expression the dog will thrive.

Anthony Vultaggio it would all depend on how old the puppy is, the way you are packing, the size of the Kong, the food it’s self. But mostly if they are hungry and been worked well, they will find a way. Most people get turned off on the idea but if they are hungry they will find a way. It’s best to keep challenging the puppy. Mostly with puppies a Kong is too tuff to chew on. So it really depends on the age, size of Kong, and the food you are using.

    • Anthony Vultaggio

Question: my pup has a hard time getting the food out. Do you pack it tightly? He kind of gives up when he cant get to it and forgets its there. Can you tell me your packing method?

Hello- im intrigued by this- but there's some info missing. If i close the gate of the crate- when do I open it? My dog goes crazy as soon as she realises im not there (will even abandon a kong). Also what do you suggest we use when we need to go out if it doesnt coincide with meal timeS? Do you suggest we try to practice leaving them alone specifically at these times?

I have a 16 week old Alaskan malamute puppy but has started jumping up to bite me, if I’m sitting on the sofa say, he’s whimpering and then jumping up to bite me. It’s like he’s not settled, but if I’m standing in the kitchen he is sleeping on the floor it’s just the minute I sit down he starts going. If I give him a chew toy or Kong it keeps him happy for 20 minutes then he comes looking for me to bite haha he enjoys his crate but when I’m home I would rather not put him in there say just so I can eat dinner I want him to just be happy with himself haha any advice welcome!

Trust the process. My dog has a severe separation anxiety. Leaving him all alone? A horror story. Step by step, using Kong and leaving him alone from half an hour to hour or two hours we ended up here - where as soon as my dog sees I'm preparing Kong for him, he just cannot wait for me to get tf out of the house. He associated it quickly. Before, he couldn't be left alone for more than half an hour. Now.. the time doesn't matter at all. Up to six hours, no problem. But please, people remember, that this solves a lot of problems yes, but a good exercise for the dog, before leaving him alone, is even more important !

You must be someone home 24/7 to do time feeding. If your not on time to feed your couch is next. Food in bowels they eat when hungry and they learn to hold till letting them out.

    • Simpawtico Dog Training
      Simpawtico Dog Training

@Candy O That's just not the norm. I'm glad it's working for you, but there are millions of dogs with food left out STILL destroying the home. Grazing all day just isn't natural for a dog. Some people get away with it-glad you are. Lots of people smoke, too, and don't get lung cancer; that doesn't mean smoking is without risks. Same with free-feeding. Whenever I do behavioral consults, that's the FIRST thing I look at. It can make a huge difference for a dog. Lots of documented research I can send you if you'd like to see.

    • Candy O
      Candy O

@Simpawtico Dog Training that why you leave food out! Their belly is full the rest and respect the home.

    • Simpawtico Dog Training
      Simpawtico Dog Training

Nonsense. Dogs don't destroy a couch when they're hungry; they destroy a couch when they're bored or anxious and have poor coping skills. You don't have to be home 24/7; millions of working folks-myself included-manage morning and evening feeding times. As long as it's within an hour or two, it's easy to do.

How does this solve 90% of behavior problems? You cant solve anything with that. If you give it as a reward for doing a good job, you can use any other toy, food or affection. Its good only for its durability for chewing, nothing else.

    • Martin Pribanic
      Martin Pribanic

@Simpawtico Dog Training what can a dog get with a kong that he cant get form walking, training and peting? And if people would think before they get a dog if they have the time and patienc for a dog then there woul not be dogs in need. And how does it help a dog if he gets adopted by somone who doesend have the time for him and kicks him back on the street?

    • Simpawtico Dog Training
      Simpawtico Dog Training

Martin we didn't say that at all. In fact in the video we said you still have to train, walk, and play. Working with toys developmentally like this IS training, it's just a type you're probably not used to. We recommend Work-to-Eat projects to ALL owners even if they have all that time you mentioned because it satisfies needs that walking and training and playing may not, even if they get a lot of it. Saying people just "shouldn't get a dog" doesn't help the dogs that are in need, now does it?

    • Martin Pribanic
      Martin Pribanic

@Simpawtico Dog Training If somone doesnt have the time to stimulate theyr dog by training, walking and playing with them they should not get a dog. If they do have the time for that they dont need a kong for behavior issues because the dong wont have them. Just giving the kong to a dog wont fix anything. People watch this video and they think okay i can get a dog, give him 4 of these and he will be good and happy. When they see that this isint the case, that they have to walk and care for the dog they kick it out on the sreet.

    • Simpawtico Dog Training
      Simpawtico Dog Training

Hi Martin. It's not used as an Operant reward. It's used as an enrichment activity that, by itself, is super mental and emotional stimulation. Then, the activity is used to Classically Condition positive emotional responses in certain behavioral contexts. The root causes for that 90% are all tied to just a few common problems in pet dog. Ditching the bowl and moving to Work-to-Eat is the first step. I would encourage you to investigate more in Canine Enrichment and the power of Work-to-Eat projects (not just Kongs).

My 2Ibs Chihuahua is 15 weeks now. She is interested in food most of the days, it makes me so sad. I bought a small Kong and just now she started to like it, but gives up pretty quick. I think she is allergic to peanut butter. Tried once and she threw up a bit. No kibbles at all, she plays with them. She is more on the raw side. I will put some chicken breast in the new Kong. This is great! I appreciate the simplicity and using what would normally be low-tier reward in a way that 's highly rewarding. I've been using jerky strips that are too stiff for him to pull out at first, but after chewing and licking get soft enough that he can finally pull them out. But this method is much cheaper.

Awesome information! Might I add that, especially if your dog is a working athlete, systematic feeding - and NOT free feeding - helps you to meter/measure/assess intake which is something ALL dedicated athletes monitor closely. It also supports predictable processing of food. You can almost time when they need to air out AND you can see if there is anything inappropriate in their waist. It's all like clock-work which serves the dog and you.

You can use any nut-butter substitute like cashew butter or almond butter. You can also use canned pumpkin or sweet potato. Kong also makes a sweet potato spread that comes in a pretty convenient squeeze tube, also, although I prefer fresher ingredients if possible.

@Simpawtico Dog Training we are also getting a new puppy in 4 days. It is a mini Aussie Doodle. Is currently just over 4 lb. Since she's certainly not going to be ready for the standard size Kong yet, I'd imagine we'll just need to get I higher number of the small size Kongs at the start and eventually move up to the standard size when she gets bigger. Are you aware of any issues with the dog having trouble getting food out of the smaller size Kongs?

@Simpawtico Dog Training thank you so much for your reply. I love your videos, they are very informative. I'm trying to crate train my rescue dog and am thinking of using this method you are teaching. If I leave the kibble filled Kong inside the crate, will it mess up the dog's poop schedule because he most likely need to poop after he gets all the kibble out of the Kong while I'm out? Thanks a lot

    • Simpawtico Dog Training
      Simpawtico Dog Training

Freezing extends the time spent engaged with the toy. It also allows you to prepare it ahead of time so you can deploy "on demand." For a new dog, you may need to just leave the kibble dry so they get into it easier.

I am so excited to find your video. I foster rescue Welsh Corgi’s and I have one now with separation anxiety. Going to try this today, Kong is in the freezer. Wish me luck....

I have found that the hotter the water, the more it is absorbed into the kibble/dry food and it can treble in size (I boil a kettle). This makes it very malleable and easy to mash into the kong, the wetter the food is, the more solid it will freeze. I've found this really handy for my German Shepherd. Jess is a powerful chewer and if the Kong (Extreme) isn't frozen, it's cleared out in less than 10 minutes. I fill with moist regular dry food/kibble, plug the hole with low fat cream cheese then freeze it. Dairy is high reward for her, tasty stuff for licking as it thaws. Your dogs will only become fussy eaters if you allow them to be, get them interested in Kongs as puppies as a throw toy first before introducing food, encourage food and play rewards as motivation early and the Kong will be your best investment to keep your dog happy. Combined with a little seaweed supplement and the occasional bone, the Kong will help keep their teeth clean too.

Do the puppy get the Kong straight from the freezer?

Yes. Perfectly safe to do so.

Good advice, however there are dogs who have very "fussy" taste and will turn up their nose a kibbles. Getting a new puppy from a private "breeder" or a shelter can come with the challenge of knowing what to do when the pup refuses the kibble. My go-to is to add broth, from a nutritional goal, but this, of course perpetuates the food preference. As the pup's orientation and health/weight becomes more stable, then I consider it acceptable to only offer kibble and fussy dog gets to be a hungry dog... this is fundamental among trainers but antithetical to most owners.

I’m curious about the one size up rule of thumb - does that apply to a very young puppy (eg from 8weeks) or is it important to stick to the puppy kong because it’s softer?

    • Simpawtico Dog Training
      Simpawtico Dog Training

I would still go one size up. I think extracting the food is a more integral component of the activity than how hard or soft the rubber is.

This is pure Dr. Ian Dunbar training, much of it word for word. It definitely works. Good job.

Loved this video, thank you I'm glad I gave your channel a try even if you only learn one thing, you still learned something. Question..The Kong I have is the largest one made as I have Great Danes and even though they look the same it has 2 holes not one. I'm guessing same primus as the single hole? and with the rope (again love this idea) how do I keep my dog from just chewing it off? Thanks Brian

Can I give the Kong in the crate when i leave for a short time (my puppy is 8 wks) as I’m not sure if it’s safe to leave him in his crate with a toy. Also we’ve been taking him out to pee/poo every half hour to 45 min. If I leave him for a couple of hours will this confuse his potty pattern for during the day? He is sleeping 4-5 hours at night before having to go out.

So if I understood correctly, 2/3rd of the daily food for the pupper should be put in a Kong. The remaining 1/3 is used for training. Does this mean we give the Kong to the pup 3 times during the day for 30 minutes (say, at 9AM, 1pm and 5pm) and re-freeze in-between sessions? And this is primary method of feeding until bowl is reintroduced in the future?

You are correct with the timing, but don't refreeze it. Throw out whatever isn't eaten. Each work-to-eat project should be fresh every time. For puppies we recommend either toy feeding OR hand feeding exclusively for at least the first few months.

This was freakin AMAZING! I can hear the famous last words in my head thinking of our little buddy Cagney who had isolation distress bordering on anxiety. And he was picky, too. If I had started him with Kong like this video shows, it would have helped tremendously, I bet. BUT...we are adopting a rescue this Saturday and I'm already stocking up on those Kongs. Thank you so much, Simpawtico Dog Training!!!

Are there stronger kongs then the black one?... Our labrador chews the top off slowly after a while. They are kind of expensive to buy new every 2-3months

You may actually want something more compressible so it's resilient to that motion. I've found the PetSafe Barnacle to be pretty good in that respect. I actually like it better than the Kong.

I had a minor issue. I have a shih tzu puppy and I bought the Xtra small kongs. The issue was the kibble when wet is soggy and he isn't able to get out the food well. He gets frustrated and I have to help squeeze out what's inside. Could I potentially not soak the kibble ( which makes it mushy )?

    • Simpawtico Dog Training
      Simpawtico Dog Training

YES, precisely. Just do it dry for the first few times until your pup gets more invested in it.

You can put raw food in it instead of kibble. The freeze-dried stuff tends to work pretty well. Even home-prepared stuff will work, too. You just have to be pretty fastidious with your cleaning afterwards. Any Work-to-Eat toy-even if kibble is used-should be picked up when the dog either finishes it, or abandons it.
